HorseDream Voices 2018
Barbara Dumont

Barbara Dumont’s interview adds an important intercultural dimension to the HorseDream story. Speaking from her experience in Chile, she makes clear that leadership is never abstract or universal in its expression—it is always shaped by history, culture, and social structure. Her description of Chilean leadership as predominantly vertical and hierarchical highlights a reality that exists in many parts of the world and helps explain why unspoken tension, hidden conflict, and emotional distance often arise in teams.

What is particularly striking is Barbara’s motivation for seeking out HorseDream. She does not describe a search for a new tool, but for a proven methodology with depth and history, one that has been tested over decades. Her intention is clear and deeply human: to help people go to work feeling better, happier, and more trusting—of themselves and of others. In the jubilee context, this reflects one of HorseDream’s enduring strengths: it offers not quick fixes, but long-term cultural learning.

Her reflections on trust, illustrated through her work with Appie, the sensitive Merens horse, bring the essence of horse-assisted learning into focus. Trust cannot be demanded or accelerated; it must be earned through presence, clarity, and self-confidence. Barbara names these capacities as “soft skills,” but her examples make clear that they are anything but soft. They are foundational life skills—relevant both personally and professionally—and especially vital in leadership contexts shaped by pressure and hierarchy.

Barbara also positions her own development honestly. While she has extensive experience in one-on-one coaching, she now consciously chooses to step into the business world, recognizing that HorseDream offers a bridge between personal development and organizational leadership. This transition mirrors the broader HorseDream journey itself: from individual insight to collective responsibility.

One of the most universal moments in the interview comes when Barbara explains why this work functions internationally. Her answer is disarmingly simple and profound: horses are the same everywhere. Cultures differ, leadership styles differ—but horses respond to authenticity, congruence, and presence in Chile just as they do in Germany, South Africa, or elsewhere. In this sense, horses are not just part of the methodology; they are its universal constant.

Her closing reflection on being “a leader of your own life” ties the interview together beautifully. Leadership, in her understanding, begins with authenticity—knowing oneself, choosing one’s own path, and having the courage to walk it. Standing beside Appie, she embodies this insight rather than merely explaining it. From a jubilee perspective, Barbara’s interview reminds us that HorseDream’s global relevance lies precisely here: in reconnecting leadership with authentic being, across cultures and continents.
